Use a flashlight to inspect below sinks, behind toilets, around water heaters, and beside water-using appliances. Look for active moisture, staining, corrosion, mineral deposits, swelling, and damaged flexible connectors.
Know the shutoff locations
Identify fixture shutoffs and the main water shutoff before an emergency. Do not force valves that are corroded, leaking, or difficult to operate.
Watch the water meter
Unexpected meter movement when fixtures are off may justify further investigation by a qualified plumber.
